Alex Weill joins Simply Three

Simply Three is ecstatic to announce the arrival of our new violinist, Alex Weill (read her impressive bio here).  We decided to get the full scoop on Alex, so read our exclusive interview with her below:

Interview with Alex Weill

Where are you from?

I am from Woodbridge, Connecticut. I currently live in Manhattan, New York.

How long have you played the violin?

Since I was three years old. So 23 years!

Do you play any other instruments?

I play the piano. I started learning it when I was eight years old. I also play the tenor steel pan and played in a steel pan band with my mom and sister.

Why did you choose a career in music?

From an early age, my parents and music teachers noticed that I had a very good ear and I was able to learn music quickly. Musicality came naturally. I was able to really internalize the emotions the music portrayed and deliver those emotions to an audience. I was blessed to have such supportive parents and I would never be where I am today without them.

What is your favorite genre of music to listen to?

I love all genres of music! The music I listen to generally depends on the type of mood I'm in at the time. I tend to be a nostalgic music listener; I love songs that remind me of past experiences, especially from when I was growing up. So if I had to choose, my favorite genre to listen to would have to be music of the 90's.

Do you have any hobbies? What are they?

I have a passion for different types of cuisine. That comes from my dad's interest which he has shared with me and my siblings and also from being a part of my mom's large Filipino family. I love reading about different, bizarre, yet tasty food and where to find it in whatever location I may be in. Having grown up by the water, I love to fish and go clamming. To be able to be out on the water or on the beach, catch fresh seafood and have my family cook it up is so satisfying for me! I also have a fascination with admiring different environments, from rocks to trees and how scenery changes depending on the location. How artists incorporate their environment into their art or incorporate their art into an environment is so amazing to me. I can never get over how mesmerizing New York City street art is and I'm so lucky to have that culture right outside my doorstep.

How did you get in touch with Simply Three?

I met Nick through another string group we perform with called ALKALI, which performs throughout the US and internationally. Nick called me and told me about Simply Three and what they do and I was extremely honored and excited to be thought of for such an incredible opportunity.

Do you come from a musical family?

Yes. It’s been in my blood on both my mother's and father's side. My maternal grandmother and my dad's cousin are classical pianists. My uncle on my mother's side is a professional saxophonist and educator. My cousin is also a professional cellist in New York City. My sister plays the cello, my brother plays the piano and drums, and my youngest brother plays the trumpet.

What is your favorite performance you have played?

Rocking out with Jay Z, Alicia Keys, and Nas for two sold out shows in Carnegie Hall to benefit the Shawn Carter Foundation, with my parents in the audience.

What is your favorite food?

I love Asian cuisine especially Japanese.

What is your favorite city that you have played in?

My favorite city where I have performed in was Shanghai, China. I loved the juxtaposition of the old city with the modern and futuristic architecture by its side. The outpouring of tradition and culture was captivating.

What's your favorite TV show?

My favorite TV show was Breaking Bad and I love Anthony Bourdain's food and travel series.

What's one of the top things on your bucket list?

I would love to go spear fishing for spiny lobster in the Florida Keys.

A Classical Take on Modern Music

It has been a trend for the past few years (or even decades) that musicians make their own renditions of classical music. A perfect example of this is Michael Buble, who did a remake of Frank Sinatra’s “Come Fly With Me” and Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good”. Rarely do you see artists who give a classical take on modern music because it's risky. Old songs already had their followers, whereas giving new arrangements to current hits are prone to criticisms since people are used to hearing the popular version. Simply Three has taken a chance on this style of music and received positive feedback for our fresh approach in some of today’s top hits such as those from Coldplay, Adele, and Gotye. Music is ever-changing just like the gaming scene, where people easily switch from old to new. Many people used to go to the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel and Casino to play slots during the 1970s, but some of them started to give up the slots for the Atari Games when it was released to the public in the 1980's. Thankfully, some gaming sites revived the slots, thus making it easier for people to access this popular casino game. There are now modern arcade versions of slots just like those at pocket fruity that can be played using your computer or smartphone.

People enjoy playing as well as listening to something new – whether it's a classical version of a new song or vice versa. Hopefully we can continue to offer a fresh sound to our fans, just like how Gregorian gave an ethereal approach to current hits. Please leave your feedback below!

Eastman Strings sponsorship

Hi Everyone! So my first post was about how "it’s all about who you know." Well, guess what? It’s been proven true yet again! Recently, we have had many great opportunities all because of who we know, and who they know, and who they know and well, you get the idea! It has honestly been amazing to see it all unfold. I’ll just start with some background info...

Eastman Strings is a company that makes instruments primarily used by students. Chances are, if you rented an instrument, or played on one that your school provided – it was an Eastman. Conveniently enough, Deanna (our wonderful mentor) made a connection with John Fulton, manager of sales, at Eastman Strings. Now, early on in Deanna’s career, she was fortunate enough to be sponsored by a company similar to Eastman Strings. They gave her an instrument to perform on and got her many performance opportunities. Having this experience be so beneficial to her career, Deanna thought that Eastman would be a great fit for us. She was kind enough to contact John and invite him to one of our school performances. John attended the concert we gave at the Arizona School for Arts. After our show he told us how impressed he was by our presentation and performance. He invited us to visit the Eastman Strings factory in California. This past weekend we traveled to the factory for a tour of the whole facility AND (drumroll please) to each pick out an instrument for us to take for future performances!

The factory is HUGE!!!!!

They had thousands of instruments in there! Literally thou-sands. It was so insane to see just the sheer amount of stuff they had under one roof! After our tour of the factory was the moment we had been eagerly awaiting. Time to pick out our new instruments!

We were all very impressed by the quality of instruments they gave us to try out. All of them sounded great so it made picking the right one a little difficult – though I won’t lie, that’s a good problem to have! With so many great options, it wasn’t too long before we each found a great fit!

After choosing instruments and a little bit of lunch (mmmmm sushi… let us know if you’re headed toward L.A. we’ll get you the info), it was time for our video shoot with Eastman Strings for their Youtube channel and promotional material. They wanted to film and record us performing so we decided to play our mash-up of Fix You and Clocks by Coldplay.

Me doing close up shots for the video.

It was then time for our interview. They asked us a lot of questions that we have never been asked before like, “What was your worst gig ever?” and, “How do you drive traffic to your YouTube and Kickstarter pages?” Of course, there were also the usual questions involving how we met and when we each started on our instruments, but overall it was probably the most unique interview I have experienced up to this point. Luckily, it was a totally comfortable experience and I think we did a great job (at least I’m hoping we did). We should be getting the footage of the performance and interview soon so we will post it when we get it! You be the judge.

Once we were done with that they gave us some cases for our instruments and sent us on our way. Eastman Strings is a class-A organization. Everyone that works there is so helpful, supportive, and polite. In the near future Eastman Strings will be sending us all around the country to give clinics and performances. We seriously can’t wait to get started! We feel so blessed and honored to be a part of the Eastman Strings family. We could not ask for a better sponsor!

And just think, all of this came our way because we knew someone who knew someone. My parting advice, similar to my first post: Build your network people, it will pay off!
